January 1: Taxes lowered, gas prices lowered

Topic: Energy

A new government took helm of Aruba early November, after beating the incumbent party in the general elections in September 2009.

The new government campaigned fiercely against many unpopular measures introduced by previous leadership. This obviously helped them into power and obtained majority seats in parliament.

One of the principal promises was the reversal of the highly disputed sales tax of 3%, introduced in 2007 by previous government. The tax is going to be eliminated in two steps of 1.5% each.

On January 1st, 2010 is the first step with half, to 1,5%. The cabinet didn’t hesitate and introduced the amendment of the law at year’s end. The New Year opened with lowered sales taxes, consequently cheaper goods and services, including gasoline prices.

Today the government published new prices in local news papers. New gas prices will be updated shortly here at arubalife.net/gasoline as well.
